Art Class for AJJ

Art..
Art is one of my very forgettable  lessons  when at school.
I had no idea of how to produce anything like my art teacher was expecting.
and  had a thoroughly horrible year with that subject at High School.

This journal spread was made with the current theme at

with  Bleubeard and Elizabeths popular theme of ''Back to School'' in mind.

Back then I perhaps  would have been happy to produce something like this page on the left.
Plenty colour with  freedom to play and create.
Using crayons and a wet tissue,
with a word stencil.
Go with the flow and see what happens.

You can see the mess, but it is my mess
and I had something in mind about how it would eventually look.

At school we had to sit in orderly rows with a blank sheet of paper  and were not encouraged to add paint until the art teacher was satisfied with the drawn outline.
Needless to say hardly any paint got as far as my paper.

Now I am happy when a background turns out like this one.
Using a quantity and variety of thick Pebeo paints.
It may take a couple of days to dry, but it leaves an acceptable textured look..
I have yet to use this base in a conventional crafty way.
The photo of it, was used for my hybrid  journal page.

Digital additions were added to both pages for my journal spread.
These days my concept and enjoyment of  Art  is  totally different from my school days.

Like this quote... by Degas.

Art is not what you see,
but what you make others see.

My teacher certainly  isn't standing over me these days to shout...' Mess'  and 'could do better.'

this leads to the second quote...

With imagination comes knowledge.

Thank you for stopping by to see me today,
you are very welcome here.

  1. Your journal spread is really good, and I am sorry you had such bad teachers for art. Children need to have fun and be creative. Have a great weekend, hugs, Valerie

  2. A fabulous spread Yvonne - I am happy that those bad art teachers didn't stop you to become an artist meanwhile . I was happy to have nice art teachers always - I loved art and sports - always my favourite school subjects.
Happy Sunday to you! Thank you very much for such a lovely spread !

  3. I am thrilled that you didn't allow a bad art experience keep you from making journal art like these hybrid images you created today. They are beautiful and quite moving.

I never took art in school, and if I had, I am sure I would have had the same experience as you. After all, I can't draw even the most rudimentary image. BUT, I also can't create digital art, either, so I continue to applaud you for your wonderful pieces you create for AJJ. I simply adore this and am SO glad you didn't allow that teacher to influence you after you were out of school.

  4. Luckily you have enough confidence in what you do to not let those early experiences define your view of art. Thank goodness we can see art for art sakes these days and enjoy all sorts and forms of beautiful art like yours that has real expression and emotion in it. Your pages are fabulous Yvonne xxx

  6. Fantastic spread Yvonne with rich colours and wonderful textures. We had to choose between art or a science when we reached the third year at Grammar school and I chose science. What a daft choice to have to make at such a young age.

    Love Chrissie xx

  7. Hi Yvonne hopefully back in full swing after my sporadic postings over the summer and thank you for your lovely comments on my blog.

I too had no idea about art whilst at school I was more into the sewing side of things and to be quite honest art all through my childhood seemed to revolve around drawing which alas isn't something I can do. But getting inky, painty and messy with stamps has totally taken over the arty side of my brain and really works for me.

Drawing pictures, who cares when you have the computer to make amazing collages and able to add beautiful images as you did on these fantastic pages. The enjoyment still comes with using the messy painty bit first. Going to leave the drawing to the experts!!!!

  8. I always loved art classes in school, and I never paid any mind to the Teachers' disliking. Love the pretty background from the paints.

  9. Loving the Victorian feel of your page. And I don't think it is mess at all. I think art teachers are still like that. The ones at my school are like that at least. I had 2 in high school. One who was like that and one who wasn't. Thanks goodness for the one who let you explore. :) Hope its been a great weekend. Hugs-Erika

  10. Fabulous pages Yvonne, Art was never one of my favorite subjects either, mainly because there was never any freedom to what you had to do - there was no going with the flow - which is what we do now.

  12. Fabulous hybrid creation Yvonne, I adore those warm autumnal tones, off set by the black and white photos and other subtle layers underneath. What a shame you had such a bad time at art class....

  13. It's amazing how many of us seem to have been stunted by our art teachers! Sometimes I wish I could see them now & say something !!!!

  14. Fabulous page Yvonne. Lovely depth on the right hand page. I can't remember anything from art class except for making a clay hedgehog. It was around the 3rd year and it was one of the compulsory lessons. Although the facilities were good at school the kids were just shunted here and there like sheep. Maybe I am being unfair and maybe it's only how I saw it. Your posts have made me think back. I don't think there were as many options available then as there are now. Wouldn't it be great to be a school and know what you know now.

  16. I took oil painting lessons. Many moons ago. Had a terrible art teacher. She would come up and take the brush and flick away on peoples pages and mine as well. She wanted everything to perfection. Anyhow my son became an artist , commercial artist and all . I think he had that gift from day one. He became an Junior Art director and a Senior senior Director . So mother here is still diddly and daddling at 75 and having fun.
Your page is I agree Fabulous. Keep doing what your doing.
